With apologies to Clement C Moore

Twas the day before Christmas and though joy’s in the air,
All creatures are rushing, no second to spare.
With carols to sing and stockings to stuff,
The kitchen’s a whirlwind of baking and love.

The concerts are finished, our voices are strained,
Yet songs still ring out, as the season ordains.
My son’s home from uni, he’s raiding the fridge.
Exclaims nothing’s there, he’s eaten all but a smidge!

Family visits are next, a once yearly meet,
As others pour from offices, filling the street.
Once more back home, with all good deeds done,
We start to think, “Perhaps the holiday battle is won?”

The family arrives, grandparents with tools,
Ready to renovate, always so cool.
When what to our wondrous eyes should appear?
More guests on the doorstep, full of holiday cheer!

A very quick dinner, we sup as a group,
Running off one last time, church closing the loop.
The evening winds down; we collapse with our tea,
Resting up for tomorrow expecting great shouts of glee.

Oh thank you, yes thank you! This present’s the best!
Hugs and kisses for all in our family nest.
Then gift giving’s done, calls to loved ones are made,
Time to kick back, relax as our energy fades.

Despite all the chaos, there’s no better time,
(Although perhaps it’s better not done in rhyme.)
So to one and to all, the best season yet,
From my family to yours, may your wishes be met.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
