COVID Blessings

There have been so many grumblings about what COVID-19 has brought us – mine included – that I thought it was time to reflect on some of the good. Here are ten of the better things that I’ve enjoyed during this pandemic.

  1. The spring migration. I’ve so enjoyed watching the birds return, grow into their summer plumage and build nests, with the melodious accompaniment of their song.
  2. The daily changes in my garden – and the fact that it’s finally just about warm enough to see if I can do my work meetings from the back patio (shh, don’t tell my boss!)
  3. No pointy high heeled shoes. I haven’t worn “proper” shoes since mid-March.
  4. No makeup! My skin has never thanked me as much.
  5. Sour dough bread. I’d forgotten how good the whole house smells when bread is baking.
  6. Community spirit. Despite making detours around each other, passers-by on walks have been more willing to meet eyes, smile and say hello.
  7. Decaffeination. With no office coffee pot to take a break at and no car trips that  just happen to include a quick stop at the drivethrough, I’ve reduced my dependence on caffeine. Herbal teas (especially sage!) and hot lemon water are my go-to now.
  8. The arts. While I’ve had tickets to the ballet and musicals that have been cancelled, I’ve been able to watch world-class Shakespeare and belt out familiar lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber productions from the comfort of my living room.
  9. Reconnecting. Whether it’s family Zoom meetings, virtual cocktails or just texts and phone calls, somehow physical distancing has equalled more frequent connection.
  10. Gratitude. I am lucky. While my activities are curtailed, I still have a job, shelter, food and a great support system.

I’m happy – if a bit anxious – to see some of the restrictions starting to be lifted. I’m curious to see how we’ll adapt as we try and build a new normal. I know we can’t go back to the way things were before. I’m happy to let the high heels be my contribution – as long as we can keep some of the good we’ve developed along the way.
